In the voice of Derek Zoolander, "[the off shoulder trend] is so hot right now". It's really really ridiculously trendy and I have hopped right on that bandwagon with the rest of the showy shoulder gals, even though I feel an innate need to pull the sleeves back up over my shoulders and stretch my arms in the air the entire time. So is this trend really for me? Is it for you? What is holding you back from trying one if you haven't already? I've tried countless forms of these tops, three of which are featured in this post, among a gaggle of which have gone back to the store. Herein is a little show and tell of my take on this year's mega trend.
is this trend for you?
Basically, yes, it can be. Barring some disgustingly maimed or disfigured shoulders for which I would plead the fifth, I've seen many ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes successfully pulling off this trend. The trick is to find an appropriate version for you and your lifestyle that shows only the amount of shoulder you want to reveal and flatters you elsewhere. Maybe you only want to reveal one shoulder. Perhaps you prefer a "cold shoulder" (which effectively gives me a strap) like I do. So essentially I've told you nothing more than the given, but the options out there are really endless, and the key is to just try them on. If you don't like it, who cares. It doesn't have to be for everyone. Just don't limit yourself by automatically excluding yourself from being able to try it!
is this trend really for me?
The jury is still out, quite honestly. First, I don't know if I actually like a full off shoulder top on me and, gosh dang it, sometimes I can't fight the urge to pull it back up over my shoulder. And seriously, they are not at all practical when you have to finagle a lot of "stuff" or engage in an activity where you need to make swift arm movements. Next, we can all be our own worst critics, and while I love them on others, I'm never truly convinced they look right on me. Here you are reading this thinking I'm going to have some fashion allknowingness and immunity from this type of struggle, but I'm human too. I can wear a spaghetti strap tank all day and not think much about it, so what's the difference? Yeah, it's probably all in my head. However, I have found that for my "issues" I favor the cold shoulder or an off shoulder with a strap. Maybe it's a little bit of a security blanket to have something up on my shoulders. Any way you look at it, I'm certain I'll keep trying them.
Next are three such tops I've tried that made the photo cut and my thoughts on each.
first up: the super girly white off shoulder
Truthfully I sort of felt like I was wearing a doily or fitted tablecloth, but the lace detail of this is still so gorgeous and I'm a sucker for a pretty white blouse. This one didn't have the structure I was looking for so I added a little side knot which may or may not have been the best choice with these jeans that slouch, and the cropped look doesn't leave a ton of room for error, bloating or eating more than a smidgen of food.
Hint: don't eat gobs of your mother's amazing homemade rice krispies treats and peanut butter fudge while suffering from travel constipation and then expect to go get super flattering photos.
Full disclosure: I gave this top to my sister-in-law shortly after this photo because she loved it and it looked so good on her. In hindsight and seeing that hindsight in photo form, it wasn't so bad on me either and was a fairly solid choice. Plus it's under $35!
next up: take a bow
It's blue, it's got a stripe, and a giant bow. It's under $50. SOLD. I was in love with the idea. The stretch band around the shoulders is nice and wide and doesn't ride up, but I was still fighting the urge to pull it up. Solution: this was actually cut so that I could cutely and easily wear with only one shoulder exposed which gave me back a little sense of security along with arm movement. The only thing that I would change to make me wear this top more is the elastic band at the bottom (never have been and never will be much of a fan of those). Looks like it's time to see if my mom wants to take on a sewing project 😉
last: the colder shoulder
If this were a Goldilocks and the three bears sort of tale, this top would be the one I would call "just right". It has the off shoulder effect, but straps which give me my seemingly necessary safety net. Add to it that it's also blue and has a stripe, and we have some dang near perfect porridge. Plus, you can see the cat loved it and just wanted to be near me in it. Only downside was this wasn't the best choice to wear on a windy day.
So tell me, have you tried the trend? Where did you find your favorite off shoulder number? What, if anything, is holding you back? Comment below and let me know anything and everything you are thinking!
